Diesel cars offer the perfect combination of fuel economy
and performance. Many diesel engines, whether they are new
or used, can achieve in excess of 50-60mpg. There are two
major contributing factors in this improvement in fuel efficiency
of petrol fuelled systems.
Efficient Combustion
Higher compression ratios allow greater engine efficiency.
Diesel engines are not spark ignited they are instead compression
ignited, their compression ratio is much higher than petrol
engines and operate at a much lower rpm. Diesel fuel is
burnt in an excess or air which is fuel efficient and less
damaging on the environment.
Diesel Energy
Diesel actually contains more energy per unit volume than
petrol. Diesel has a high density, resulting in roughly
30% more energy per litre of fuel when compared to petrol.
In other words, you can buy more energy per pound, when
purchasing diesel.
New advances in high pressure injection technology further
improves atomisation, fuel ignition and combustion, resulting
in further improvements to fuel economy and efficiency.
The average diesel fuelled car will be at least 25-30%
more fuel efficient and economic.
