Routine servicing is important for any engine, whether
it be diesel or petrol fuelled. Adhering to recommended
service intervals will protect your engine from premature
failure and prolong its working life, but it will also ensure
performance and fuel economy are maintained.
Servicing Diesel Engines
Typically diesel engines will require more frequent servicing
that petrol engines. However this is often is offset by
the costs of complexity of each service. Petrol engines
will require replacement sparks plugs throughout their life,
diesel engines do not require spark plugs, but do require
glow plugs to assist at cold start up. Glow plugs rarely
require replacement and have a longer service life.
The Peugeot HDi engine for example has a service interval
of 12,000 miles.
An Interim Service should always replace engine oil and
oil filter. Often either air and/or fuel filters will require
replacement to ensure the engine has an unrestricted flow
of both air and fuel.
