What is the RMI?
The Retail Motor Industry Federation is a privately run
organisation. It works hard to represent its members, which consists of
thousands of retail motor businesses across England, Wales, Northern Ireland
and the Isle of Man.
It provides legal and practical advice to its members on problems and issues
they may face on a daily basis.
In particular it operates a Code of Practice which all members must comply with.
This code is designed to ensure that members live up to a clear standard that
provides the consumer with the confidence that they are dealing with a
reputable and honest dealer.
The Code of Practice was originally drawn up in conjunction with the Society of
Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the Retail Motor Industry Federation
(RMI) and the Scottish Motor Trade Association (SMTA) and in consultation with
the Director General of the Office of Fair Trading (OFT). Since its launch it
has been regularly revised and improved.
If consumers have a complaint about a member they are able to make
representation directly to the RMI.
The Code of Practice is comprehensive and covers in detail on the following
topics:
-
Used car sales
-
Extended warranties and vehicle guarantees
-
Simple and concise documentation
-
Vehicle descriptions
-
Mechanical quality
-
Non-misleading Advertising
-
Handling complaints
